Raff's opera is now celebrated as a real discovery in Germany and the premiere took place in Weimar at the National Theater, whose director was none other than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for 25 years, sometimes together with Friedrich Schiller. And you can say it straight away: “Samson” was also a complete success with the audience, with long-lasting applause and many shouts of “Bravo” for the singers, the director, the conductor, the orchestra, and also for Joachim Raff… 170 years later than planned.
