In his truly encyclopedic monograph "The Symphonic Repertoire", the musicologist A. Peter Brown introduces his article on Raff's op. 153 with these words: “Whatever Symphony No. 2’s status, its successor, Symphony No. 3 “Im Walde” (In the Forest), became one of the composer’s most frequently heard works, if reports in contemporary periodicals are any indication. It stayed in the orchestral repertoire into the beginning of the twentieth century; Arturo Toscanini even conducted it with the New York Philharmonic in January 1931, to the complaints of the New York critics.”

Als im Jahre 1887 der "Führer durch den Concertsaal" von Hermann  Kretzschmar in dritter Auflage erschien, war dort über den fünf Jahre  zuvor gestorbenen Komponisten von 11 Sinfonien und 4 Suiten für Orchester zu lesen: "Joachim Raff ist derjenige, welcher nach Berlioz und  Liszt am erfolgreichsten das Banner der Programmmusik in das Gebiet  der grossen Sinfonie hinübergetragen hat."
