The first movement develops various main and secondary ideas, among which the lyrical theme already delighted contemporaries. "Quickly, but calmly," is the multi-layered performance instruction, in which the urgent and inhibiting features of the movement resonate in equal measure.
Der Kopfsatz des Streichquartetts Nr. 2 A-Dur op. 90 entfaltet verschiedene Haupt- und Nebengedanken, unter denen das lyrische Thema schon die Zeitgenossen beglückte. „Rasch, jedoch ruhig", so lautet die mehrschichtige Vortragsanweisung, in welcher die drängenden und hemmenden Züge des Satzes gleichermaßen anklingen.
