"Whatever Symphony No. 2's status, its successor, Symphony No. 3 'Im Walde' (In the Forest), became one of the composer's most frequently heard works… It stayed in the orchestral repertoire into the beginning of the twentieth century; Arturo Toscanini even conducted it with the New York Philharmonic in January 1931."
Als im Jahre 1887 der „Führer durch den Concertsaal" von Hermann Kretzschmar erschien, war über Raff zu lesen: „Joachim Raff ist derjenige, welcher nach Berlioz und Liszt am erfolgreichsten das Banner der Programmmusik in das Gebiet der grossen Sinfonie hinübergetragen hat."
